A weekend is never long enough in the Daylesford and Macedon Ranges region, so stay for a little longer, get off the beaten path and discover charming, lesser-known towns.

DAY 1 – KYNETON

Start your journey in Kyneton, an easy hour’s drive north of Melbourne along the Calder Freeway. On arrival, explore Black Hill Reserve by hiking around The Monolith, one of Australia’s largest granite rocks. Then stroll along the Campaspe River Walk, a picturesque trail snaking past Kyneton’s Botanical Gardens, a sculpture park and platypus habitat.

Back in town, the heritage-listed Piper Street houses galleries, boutiques and some of Victoria’s best food and drink offerings. Peruse designer wares at Kabinett, before popping upstairs to Botanik for finely crafted cocktail. Dine on delicious Italian fare at Marchesa or grab a picnic to go at Piper Street Food Co. Before leaving, make sure you pop into Cavaletti Gallery and The Old Auction House for handcrafted goods.

DAY 2 – MALMSBURY, LANCEFIELD & ROMSEY

Start day two in the enchanting hamlet of Malmsbury, with breakfast at the Malmsbury Bakery. Explore the verdant botanic gardens (keeping an eye out for the local geese) and the spectacular 1860s bluestone Malmsbury Viaduct – Victoria’s largest masonry bridge. Be sure to pop into Madame Vintage and Rathdowne Antiques to peruse the vintage wares.

Then discover some of the area’s cool climate wineries. At Parkside Estate and Farm (between Lancefield and Romsey), soak up breathtaking views while sampling award-winning sparkling and chardonnay. North of Lancefield is Curly Flat Vineyard, known for its naturally fermented wines.

Drop in for lunch (weekends only) at Cleveland Winery where the wood-fired pizzas are perfect with a glass of sparkling pinot noir or full-bodied shiraz. Finish off at The Lost Watering Hole, where you can sip on locally crafted brews as you tuck into a hearty main.

DAY 3 – MOUNT MACEDON & WOODEND

With its bright red door reflecting the flame-coloured leaves atop Mount Macedon during autumn, the Trading Post is the ultimate stop for house-made cakes, pies and local produce. Down the mountain is Mount Towrong vineyard, a sustainable family-owned winery serving rustic Italian fare to match their crisp wines.

Rising from the surrounding countryside is Hanging Rock, known as Ngannelong by the Traditional Owners of the land. Hike to the summit or thread your way through the reserve on numerous paths before grabbing a bite to eat at Hanging Rock Café. Time for a tipple? Nearby, you can sample award-winning small batch gins at Big Tree Distillery. Or stop by Woodend’s Holgate Brewhouse and Taproom, where an extensive range of craft beers are brewed on site. Afterwards, head for a nightcap at either Gindu or Woodend Cellar & Bar.

DAY 4: HARCOURT, CASTLEMAINE & MALDON

Pack your bags for a short, northern detour through charming goldfields towns.

Have breakfast at the Harcourt Produce and General Store (try a Danish tart). A great playground is opposite, while keen mountain bikers should hit the trails at La Larr Bagauwa Park. In Castlemaine, the artisan smallgoods, boutique wines, fresh sourdough, cheese and chocolate are popular at The Mill Castlemaine. For lunch try locals favourites, Wild or Das Kaffeehaus.

Then board the Victorian Goldfields Steam Railway, journeying through Box-Ironbark forest and the traditional lands of the Dja Dja Wurrung. Arriving in Maldon, Australia’s first notable town, noted for its 19th century appearance maintained since the gold rush era. The beautiful heritage streetscape is a treasure trove of antique shops, collectables and local galleries offering carefully curated lifestyle products for your home.

DAY 5: DAYLESFORD

Renowned for its creative communities, it’s time to discover Daylesford’s local artists. Start at the majestic Convent Gallery where exhibitions change regularly. Then explore Black Gallery, or Clayfire Gallery. For beautiful ceramics, visit Minna Graham’s studio, where nature has a dramatic influence on her creations. For lunch, try Wombat Hill House – a darling, renovated cottage or locals’ favourite, Cliffy’s Emporium.

There’s no better place to indulge than in Australia’s spa capital where Swiss and Italian migrants have long championed the area’s mineral springs. Bring an empty bottle for the pure waters at the Hepburn Springs Mineral Reserve.

For complete relaxation, book into Hepburn Bathhouse and Spa, soaking tension away in the mineral waters before a massage. Follow up with a delicious multi course dinner menu (choose from two, three or four courses) at The Boathouse Daylesford, a delightful French influenced restaurant sitting atop Lake Daylesford.

DAY 6: CRESWICK, CLUNES & TALBOT

An easy 20-minute drive west of Daylesford, is Creswick, with its historic redbrick buildings, iconic Woollen Mill and Djuwang Baring mountain bike park. A little further north you’ll find historic Clunes (a town for true booklovers, and the site of Clunes Booktown each March). From there, it’s a short drive to Talbot, home to a charming goldrush era streetscape. Time it right and you’ll catch the Talbot Farmers’ Market (third Sunday of every month) – recognised as one of the region’s best.

Then stop at the estate vineyard of Passing Clouds, renowned for its complex pinot noir and crisp chardonnay. And art lovers – don’t miss Bullarto Gallery, which exhibits the visceral art of painter Phillip Edwards.

If there’s time on the clock for a spectacular garden, drop into The Garden of St Erth in the picturesque village of Blackwood, tucked in between the Wombat and Lerderderg State Park.

The Daylesford and Macedon Ranges region is home to an abundance of natural swimming spots, providing the perfect place to cool down on a hot day.

Slide into cooling creeks, soak beneath tumbling waterfalls, or unwind in natural mineral springs and pristine lakes. Take your pick from these picturesque spots and live your best chill life this summer.

AshElm Studios Calembeen Park 1

Calembeen Park

Creswick’s Calembeen Park boasts two beautiful lakes surrounded by birdlife and stunning waterlily displays. Originally a site mined by Chinese settlers in the 1850s and 1860s, the park became a popular swimming spot in the early 1900s. The recently restored historic, multi-level dive tower is particularly popular during the warmer months, as is the toddler pool.

St George’s Lake

Just outside of Creswick, another popular swimming spot is St George’s Lake. Surrounded by eucalyptus tree, you can follow the 1.8 kilometre Lake Loop Walk before taking a dip in this picturesque spot. Many an hour can be spent here relaxing on the beach or the adjoining grassy picnic area.

Lake Daylesford, Victoria, Australia
Lake Daylesford

Lake Daylesford

Located in the heart of town, Lake Daylesford is a beautiful spot for a relaxing swim, surrounded by nature. The jetty (accessible via the main carpark off Leggatt Street) has a small sandy beach for calm water swimming, and you can also jump from the jetty or diving platform. Lake Daylesford is also a popular spot for kayaking and stand up paddle boarding.

Jubilee Lake 1

Jubilee Lake

Just a short drive from town, Jubilee Lake is Daylesford’s hidden gem. Relax on the sandy beach, greet the resident peacocks, and let the kids splash in the shallow play area. Perfect for a paddle, you can bring your own gear or hire a canoe or paddle boat from Jubilee Lake Holiday Park. There is also an excellent playground for the little ones.

Escape the city crowds by dipping your toes or flying off the Tarzan swing at this Macedon swimming hole, locally known as ‘The Res’. This hidden gem (accessible off Nursery Road) is a hangout for local teenagers and families in summer. Avid movie fans might recognize this spot from the Liam Neeson action thriller Backlight, which includes a scene filmed right here.

The Cascades

The Cascades is nestled away just north of Metcalfe (about 20 minutes north of Kyneton). Here, water from the Coliban River tumbles over layers of bedrock through rock pools, through crevices and funnels into little caverns. Relax in the rock pools or take a swim in one of the bigger swimming holes

Vaughan Springs

Another hidden gem is the Loddon River pool at the picturesque Vaughan Springs just outside Castlemaine (around 15 minutes south). There’s a rope swing for the adventurous and giant gum trees for those who prefer to relax in the shade. The kids will also love the giant slide in the adjoining park.

Splash Parks

Our region also boasts two fantastic waterplay options, perfect for those travelling with younger kids. Check out Kyneton Community Garden (within the Kyneton Botanic Gardens) for a cooling cruise through the rushes, with surprise sprinklers and little fountains. Over in Creswick, the council-run Splash Park is free for anyone who is daring enough to run the gauntlet through the rainbow of sprinklers!

With the arrival of the warmer weather and longer days, we can’t think of a better way to enjoy the bountiful produce of the Daylesford and Macedon Ranges region than by pulling up a pew outdoors.

Whether you prefer lake, vineyard, or mountain views, or simply want to watch the passing parade, we have something to suit you.

CLIFFY’S EMPORIUM
A Daylesford icon and a must visit when you’re in town. The inside is full of romantic nooks and crannies, whilst the outside has all the feelings of a small Italian hamlet. Music is piped through to the outdoor areas and service is always friendly and relaxed.

BOATHOUSE RESTAURANT
Take a seat on the deck and watch the world go by. Perched above Lake Daylesford, you are given a sense of being right on the water. Watch swimmers take a daily dip, paddle boarders float across the lake and anglers haul in trout and redfin from the bank. There are two- or three-course offerings, the food is refined and influenced by classic French cookery.

HOLGATE BREWHOUSE
Summer days call for cold beers and delicious food in one of Holgate Brewhouse’s spacious outdoor dining areas in Woodend. Their modern Taproom features 16 taps of limited beers, along with a shaded courtyard. Meanwhile, their Historic Hotel has a beer garden and ample outdoor seating with plenty of shade, where you can tuck into gourmet mains, pub classics and share plates.

TUKI
If you feel like quality food, in a truly rural setting, with sublime views, you can’t go past Tuki. Located on the ‘Stoney Rises’, outside Daylesford, the panoramic views are the about the only thing that might distract you from the excellent food. Tuki is a true paddock to plate experience. From the pond to the pan and from the paddock to the plate, the menu draws upon produce grown and harvested onsite.

HOTEL TRENTHAM
With the motto “There Are No Strangers Here – Just Friends You Haven’t Met Yet,” Hotel Trentham embodies the welcoming spirit of a classic country pub. Seating up to 200 people, their beer garden boasts plenty of shaded areas and overlooks Trentham Town Square. With a menu featuring pub classics, live music every Sunday and games for the kids, it is a fantastic family option. Dogs are welcome too.

THE PIG AND WHISTLE HOTEL
The Pig & Whistle Hotel in Trentham East is the quintessential country pub, full of all of your favourite elements. Live music, a classic parma, eight beers on tap and a beer garden made for a party. The perfect location for a long lunch or dinner under the stars.

Boathouse

DAYLESFORD CIDER
Daylesford Cider is an ideal location for an afternoon session. Grab a paddle of their award-winning ciders, order a wood-fired pizza and listen to live music on weekends. Enjoy a picnic on the grass, have a game of bocce, and, if you’re partial to a bubbly drink, try the Watermelon Fizz. It’s as fun as it sounds.

DAYLESFORD HOTEL
The historic Daylesford Hotel has embarked on a new chapter, with the renowned team behind Daylesford’s Cliffy’s Emporium and Beppe restaurant having recently taking over the reins. Feast on delicious fare (by accomplished chef Rob Kabboord) in the leafy beer garden, or opt for the generous upstairs veranda, which gives you an eagle eye view over Daylesford and is a top spot for stunning sunset views.

MT TOWRONG VINEYARD
Winery dogs are one of the best reasons to visit a vineyard, and best boy Banjo is at the ready for pats. Come for Banjo and stay for the beautiful food and stunning surrounds. The industrial balcony provides a contemporary space to enjoy Mt Towrong’s rustic Italian fare.

THE COSMOPOLITAN HOTEL
The beer garden at The Cosmopolitan Hotel (affectionately known as The Cosmo by locals) is like no other. This Trentham-based pub celebrated 157 years this year, and the established gardens and hundred-yearold elm trees stand proudly, providing dappled light on a summer afternoon. With an ethos of supporting local, you will find food, beer and wine all sourced from the region.

LE BOUCHON AT ATTWOODS
Le Bouchon serves up traditional French fare surrounded by classic Australian landscapes. Get comfortable sitting in the terraced garden overlooking lush rolling hills. As the weather begins to get warmer, picture yourself having a long lunch in the garden, glass of chardonnay in hand. You could be forgiven for thinking you have been transported to the wine regions of France.

THE VIRGIN KITCHEN
Located in the heart of Hepburn Springs, think stylish cane armchairs, a white pebble stone courtyard and a sense of serenity. An established leafy garden and Parisian style umbrellas will shade you from the summer sun. Or arrive later and settle in for dinner as the sun sinks over the surrounding forest. Local produce is the hero on the fresh and modern all-day menu.

KUZU IZAKAYA
Order a sake, take a seat under a colourful umbrella and prepare to be nourished Kuzu style. Whether it’s traditional sashimi or something more adventurous like kangaroo tartare, you’re in for a treat.

THE SOCIAL FOUNDRY
The Social Foundry is both good for the soul and good for the belly. A social enterprise in the heart of Kyneton with a funky outdoor deck, planter boxes and Astro Turf, the all-day menu is contemporary with a healthy fresh vibe. For the sweet tooth, the house baked goodies are to die for.

BETEL BOY
There is no better place to people watch than on a comfy couch in the main street of Daylesford. Order a cocktail and settle in for an afternoon or evening of authentic Pan Asian. Daylesford loves a bit of fanfare, and this is the prime position to capture the action of popular events such as ChillOut or Daylesford’s New Year’s Eve Parade.

Boutique cool climate winery, hand crafted wines, grown sustainably.

Our 70 acre property has 12 acres of vineyard on the North side of an extinct volcano. We farm with a regenerative mindset with a focus on improving soil life and creating a vineyard ecosystem in harmony with nature.

Wander past the 1860’s homestead to the large barn-like structure behind the house. Grab a seat at the bar in our cosy cellardoor tasting room or head oustide to relax under the trees or pergola and soak in the views. Our range of wines have a strong focus on sparkling wine, with winemaker & owner Brian having a background in sparkling wine production for wineries across Australia. Our range also includes Riesling, Chardonnay, Rose, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese and Shiraz. Some of our grapes are sourced from the nearby Heathcote wine region.

Stay for a while and enjoy a platter made with local produce. Open 12-5pm every weekend.
