If you need an outdoor mountain bike fix of sweat and dirt or a downhill challenge to leave your muscles charged and bike mud splattered - then the Daylesford Macedon region has just the trail for you.
Set amongst stunning native vegetation, you can choose your two-wheeled, adrenalin-hit destination with the best guide to what’s what – The Macedon Ranges Ride Guide.
It dives into 16 tracks, 16 road, and off-road, bike trails for mountain bikers and is a must-have when you’re planning your master list for mud, guts and biking glory.
In the meantime here are our top picks of TRACKS TO GET YOUR HEART PUMPING:
Two of the Great Dividing Trails Gold Field Tracks:
1. Wallaby Track – From the Creswick Regional Park, the Wallaby Track takes you along 29km all the way to Wombat Station and a further 19km from Wombat Station to Daylesford, and it is not be missed. It has killer scenery, big old trees and terrain to test your mettle.
2. Dry Diggings Track – Daylesford to Castlemaine. It’s a 3-section track including an 8km descent from Daylesford to Hepburn Springs, then a 21km section from the Chocolate Mill (essential stop!) to Vaughan Springs and the final 19km will deliver you to Castlemaine. It’s becoming a really popular ride and a great one to take in the beauty of the surrounds.
Kyneton to Malmsbury return and Kyneton Twin Reservoirs trails: These two sealed-road-rides around Kyneton take in some sightseeing and are both about 30km in distance. It’s a great ride for the more sedate amongst us who also want to take a picnic and perhaps attach a basket to our bike. I’m thinking French countryside here ladies.
Blackwood West trails: This is a stunning track. Most of the trails are based around the Garden of St Erth area with some fire tracks that go off into the gorgeous Lerderderg Track. There is a map of the trails near the Blackwood Merchant Store – be sure to pick up a coffee too.
Finally, the RACV GoldFields Resort has international standard mountain biking trails and fabulous accommodation to collapse at afterwards. The free-to-use trail flows through the Resort’s golf course and makes use of as much of the natural formation as possible. The 4.5km circuit has all the elements riders need for maximum fun – jumps, vistas and sweeping hills!
